6 Tips for Healthy Grocery Shopping
Anyone else feel overwhelmed by grocery shopping not to mention the planning and making healthy choices in the process!
You aren't alone!
I know it can be a pain to find the time each week to grocery shop for healthy foods. I know that it’s tempting to throw a box of pasta and a jar of sauce in your cart, and that’s OKAY to do occasionally, but if you eat too many processed and convenience foods, you’ll struggle to lose weight.
Instead, check out my 6 best tips to make grocery shopping for healthy foods EASIER for you:
1. Plan ahead. Create a healthy menu that you plan to cook, and from that, create your grocery list. Treat your list like an RX from your doctor. Don’t buy foods that aren’t on your list. Your wallet and your waistline will thank you
2. Stick to the 80/20 fresh/processed food rule. Try to keep 80% of the foods in your cart whole foods (like lean protein, fruits, veggies, etc). 20% of the foods in your cart can be in a box or bag (usually this means they are processed).
3. Buy lean proteins and whole grains in bulk. Don’t be afraid to freeze lean meats like chicken and ground beef, and stock up on brown rice and quinoa in bulk. This will save time with future grocery trips and money.
4. Mostly shop the perimeter of the store. The inner aisles are where the highly processed, less nutritious foods are usually kept. If you avoid those aisles, you won’t buy those foods.
5. Read your ingredient labels! As a general rule of thumb, the fewer ingredients a food has, the less processed it is. Mostly choose foods with short ingredients lists
6. Wash and cut all produce as soon as you get home. If it’s ready-to-go when you need it, you’ll EAT IT. Chances are you’ll grab a convenient processed snack (like pretzels) if you know you need to cut veggies when you want a snack.
